I think you can see that video at the Der Derian page I linked to also. Yup, Virilio would have loved this. Der Derian draws more heavily on Virilio than perhaps any other writer except Walter Benjamin, although he expands Virilio's rather dark thesis into something more tangible and immediate. Both Virilio and Der Derian are prone to technological determinism, although neither can be accused of not reading the runes more-or-less correctly.

Der Derian's Virtuous War is essentially a critique of the Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA), and concludes thus:

Facing the multiple pathologies of the global war on terror, having spent a decade deciphering the mixed signals of virtuous wars [i.e. hi-tech wars theoretically characterised by remote warfare and semiotic conflict], and after the sacrifice of so many humans, I no longer doubt that the cure [the RMA] has proven worse than the disease.

Strong stuff. So where does televised cyberwar simulation fit into all this? ...

Jeff,

I'm aware of the simulated media environments that are such a major part of crisis response training these days. The ones I've seen are pretty sophisticated and can be real game-changers.

Here's a GNN video posted last month:
http://somalilandpress.com/10882/somaliland-recognition-in-june-future-scenarios/

It was the mention of CNN later in the Atlantic article that got me thinking about this initially. It wouldn't be at all unusual for the experience to be recorded, of course, but I admit to being a little off-course in my initial judgement.

The really interesting bit is still where the game and its media traces interact with the wider network beyond its participants. That's already happening, of course, and I wonder how or if that feeds back into the game somehow?

Tim - I doubt you're dim... I would strongly speculate that "GNN" is a reproduction of CNN modeled for the exercise. The replication is quite good if this is in fact what they will show "live" and most likely on closed circuit TV for the exercise audience. I've watched "GNN" during other National Level Exercises and that helps give the participants a more realistic feel and reaction to energize the exercise play.... I am not sure how much the real CNN will get as snipets or live feeds...
