Well, while we are on the topic of recruiting videos, take a gander at this one for the Canadian Forces.

Note that despite the visible weapons and aarrrmy (for those of a certain age, think Bill Murray in Stripes) type scenes, look at the tag lines. Yes, you are being invited to fight with the Canadian Forces, but fight what, exactly? Terrorism? No. Terrorists? No. Terror? No, dammit! (Pay attention! Didn’t you watch the video?!?) You are invited to fight Fear. Distress. Chaos. The video does show a wide range of military activities, but is actually more about rescuing than fighting. Howzat grab ya? Sounds pretty ‘human security’-ish, doesn’t it? It strikes one that one is trying to eat one’s cake and have it.

Rather confusing, isn’t it. Least it is to my weary Irish eyes. We start off in the Gulf of Oman, OK, then jump to AFG, er..alright, then some mountain somewhere, then out a plane, hang on, where are we now?

An interesting contribution on military recruitment videos from a professional adman. http://www.canada.com/components/print.aspx?id=f73511ce-69fe-459c-8a63-b5f8727cac87&sponsor=

I find myself out of words soon after studying your wonderful report. It truly is incredibly helpful and for the point. I’m taking back a whole lot.
